Event posters, promotional posters and display pieces usually work well at 150 to 300 dpi at final size, depending on the design. If the layout is bold and image-led, you can often sit closer to 150 dpi without visible loss.

Large wall graphics, retail displays and oversized posters often print well at 100 to 150 dpi at final size because they are not normally viewed from a few inches away. In these cases, chasing 300 dpi can create unnecessarily heavy files without improving the printed result.

Fine art and photographic posters deserve a bit more care. If the goal is presentation-grade output with tonal detail and crispness, 240 to 300 dpi is the right target. That is especially true for giclee-style work, where texture, shadow detail and edge clarity matter.

Why final size matters more than file size

A large file is not automatically a high-quality file. We regularly come across artwork that is 100MB or more but still low resolution where it counts. File size can be inflated by layers, embedded profiles or inefficient saving. None of that guarantees a sharp print.

What matters is pixel dimensions relative to the finished poster size. If you are printing an A2 poster, the image needs enough pixels to cover A2 at the chosen dpi. That is the figure worth checking.

As a rough guide, an A2 poster at 300 dpi needs around 4961 x 7016 pixels. The same poster at 150 dpi needs around 2480 x 3508 pixels. Both may be usable, but they will behave differently depending on the content and viewing distance.

When lower resolution is perfectly fine

There is a tendency to treat 300 dpi as the only acceptable answer, but print is more nuanced than that. A well-designed poster at 150 dpi can look better than a badly prepared one at 300 dpi.

If the poster uses large headlines, simple graphics and one strong photo, a lower resolution file can still produce an excellent result. The same applies to venue posters, directional signage and short-term campaign graphics where immediate impact matters more than microscopic detail.
